Education frameworks

Teaching at Avans University of Applied Sciences takes place according to statutory frameworks, national agreements and internal policy.
Statutory frameworks
- Dutch Higher Education and Research Act (WHW)
This act, which was introduced in 1992 and has been amended numerous times since then, forms the statutory framework for education.

Framework Regulations for the Program-Specific Part of the Students’ Charter (Framework Education and Examination Rules)
The articles relating to admissions, the curriculum and examinations have been adopted or specified in further detail in the Framework Regulations for the Program-Specific Part of the Students’ Charter. This is generally referred to as the Framework Education and Examination Rules, because it is used by the schools when producing their Education and Examination Rules. This Framework is an Executive Board policy document.The Education and Examination Rules should be viewed as a contract between the institute and the student and describe the requirements that students must meet.
- European Qualifications Framework for Higher Education
A completely different type of framework is the European Qualifications Framework for Higher Education, also sometimes called the ‘Dublin Descriptors’. These are descriptions that apply to all 43 countries that have signed up to the Bologna Process and are therefore not limited to the EU. They set out the requirements that institutes must meet in order to confer the degrees of Ad, Bachelor, Master or Doctor.
National agreements
Study programs at higher professional institutes must also comply with national agreements on attainment targets, generally ratified by the relevant professional field. Since 2000, these attainment targets have been generally formulated in terms of competencies. Institutes can add a number of their own professional qualifications to these national qualifications.
Internal policy
- Avans University of Applied Sciences Educational Vision
An internally established framework is the educational vision, which the Executive Board presented during the 2007 university day. The vision sets out in educational terms how teaching should take place within our institution.
- Study program framework
The study program framework describes the educational vision and professional qualifications in greater detail. This document gives a full explanation of the study program, and therefore largely forms the basis for prospectuses and accreditation.
- Bachelor’s degree program policy framework
The bachelor’s degree program policy framework describes the framework agreements reached within Avans University of Applied Sciences about the structure of bachelor’s degree programs within the schools. The framework agreements are binding. The policy framework describes matters such as the study program structure of bachelor’s degree programs at Avans University of Applied Sciences.
Bachelor’s degree programs at Avans University of Applied Sciences consist of a professional profile component and an individual profile component. The professional profile component is taken from the domain competencies and determines the title conferred. The student is free to choose the individual profile component.
Major/minor structure
Related components within the study programs are divided into majors and minors. A major is worth 180 or 210 credits. A minor is worth 30 credits.
